On Monday, September 11, 2006, Robert Anderson was recognized at the APWA award ceremony in Kansas City, Missouri. Robert was presented with the Professional Manager of the Year Award in the Solid Waste Category.
The Professional Manager of the Year Award in the Solid Waste category seeks to inspire excellence and dedication in the private and public sectors by recognizing the outstanding career service achievements of solid waste management professionals. The primary focus of this award is recognition of exceptional management, operations, and maintenance of public sector solid waste operations.
Since the onset of his employment with the City of Columbia, Robert Anderson has initiated effort to improve the overall operation of the Solid Waste Division and implement programs that provide extended services that benefit the citizens of the city. He designed and implemented the City’s recycling program that is currently responsible for recycling 4,435 tons of materials each year. In addition, he developed and implemented the plan for automated garbage collection. Anderson also was instrumental in the process of revamping the City’s composting facility that successfully diverts 9,100 tons of material from the landfill each year.
In 1994, the City’s Solid Waste Division, under Anderson’s leadership, was selected as the national certification site by Toter Incorporated for the weight-based garbage collection. In 1998, Anderson participated on a statewide benchmarking committee through which standards were developed for use in the solid waste industry in South Carolina. He is currently pursuing options to implement an e-waste recycling program for the City of Columbia.
